Hide and Sleep: Designing a Murphy Bed with Custom Cabinets

When it comes to maximizing space in small rooms, using a Murphy Bed can be an excellent solution. A fold-away bed can change a simple bedroom into a multifunctional space in just minutes. What’s even better? You can elevate your design with custom cabinetry to create a seamless, functional unit, perfectly tailored to your space.
If you’re thinking of getting a Murphy Bed unit, keep reading to learn about one of my favorite projects, showing you how we designed a custom bed to make the most of a compact space.
For this particular project, our homeowners had two main goals: maximizing space and adding extra storage while integrating a Murphy Bed that would transform a nursery into a guest bedroom.
Whether you’re converting a room into a home office, library, or, in this case, a nursery, Murphy Beds provide flexibility, creating a versatile space. For this project, we decided a queen-sized unit would be ideal. It would efficiently use the available space and be large enough to comfortably accommodate guests – most likely the grandparents – when the new baby arrived.
Using our Decor Custom Cabinetry line, we designed matching cabinetry units around the bed, creating a cohesive look while adding valuable storage. We wanted the bed to be fully integrated, feeling like a purposeful part of the room’s design, rather than an afterthought.
By using custom cabinetry, we could incorporate various solutions to store everything from baby essentials to extra pillows. We were also able to incorporate an open shelving unit for books, photos, and cherished baby toys. Working within the specific dimensions required for the bed, we wanted to make sure the storage didn’t overcrowd the room but still took advantage of as much space as possible.

One of the best things about custom cabinetry is that it’s incredibly versatile. Whether your aesthetic is modern, rustic, or industrial, we can design our cabinets to suit your style!
For this design, we selected shaker-style cabinets in a soft green paint — a perfect match for the cozy, welcoming vibe of the nursery. To keep the unit from feeling too heavy in the small room, we also matched the cabinetry color to the wall, allowing the bed unit to blend into the space.

One additional benefit of working with us is that we don’t just sell cabinets and Murphy Beds—we install them. Our in-house team of installers ensures that your entire Murphy Bed and cabinetry unit is secure, giving you peace of mind that everything is safely in place and ready to use.
We intentionally chose official Murphy Bed Hardware, which is second to none. The bed is designed with smooth, easy-to-use mechanisms that require minimal effort to set up or hide away, meaning you can quickly transform a room without hassle. Plus, safety was a top priority, especially in a nursery and the high-quality hardware ensures a reliable, secure experience whether the bed is in use or tucked away.

A Murphy Bed can quickly make your room more versatile. It combines function and beauty, with personalized storage options and seamless integration into your room’s design.
