5 Small Decisions That Can Set Your Kitchen Apart

When it comes to kitchen cabinetry, small details can help set your design apart. Subtle design choices can elevate your space, add personality, and create a custom look unique to you. Here are five small but significant details that you can include to make your space feel intentional and beautifully finished.

1. Top Moldings

Whether you’re taking your cabinets all the way to the ceiling or keeping them at a standard height, top moldings are one detail your designer will always bring up. The style you choose can instantly set the tone of your kitchen.

A simple, straight flush molding is perfect for a modern, seamless look. On the other hand, more decorative moldings add character, suiting a more traditional or transitional style and can soften the transition between cabinetry and ceiling.

2. Countertop Profiles

A fun detail upgrade is adding a unique profile to your countertop edges. This small detail can elevate everything from kitchen islands to vanities to fireplace-built ins. Whether you want something clean and simpler or a little more decorative, profiling the edges is an easy way to introduce some extra style.

3. Glass Detailing

Glass cabinetry is one of the best ways to add your personality to a kitchen. First, by selecting the type of glass – i.e. clear, antique, reeded, mirrored, and more – and second, by choosing what you display inside.

You can also enhance the look with different mullion options, from simple cross patterns to custom metal or more ornate designs. These elements create a completely customized feel and let you showcase your favourite pieces.

4. Furniture Base

A personal favourite detail of mine is adding a furniture base around cabinetry. This works beautifully on kitchen islands, but looks great in mudrooms, offices, and built-in units throughout a home.

Just like top molding, furniture base molding comes in options from simple and modern to decorative styles. No matter the design, they help make a space feel grounded, intentional, and fully finished.

5. Premium Finishes

At Decor Cabinets, there are several premium finish upgrades you can choose to enhance your cabinetry. A few of my favourite projects from the last couple of years feature distressed finishes, which can bring a traditional or rustic feel depending on the home.

You can also try out glazes and different sheen levels. Our new satin sheen, for example, offers a beautiful matte look that adds quiet elegance and a modern touch to any design.

Designing a kitchen is all about creating a space that feels like you – functional, beautiful, and thoughtfully curated. These details may seem small compared to choices like colours and layouts, but together they can completely transform the look and feel of your home. If you’re planning a renovation or new build, consider which of these ideas speak to your style and how they could bring your personality into your kitchen.
